‘German composers and producers Sven Laux and Logic Moon have each spent more than a decade cultivating distinctive voices within the contemporary ambient and post-classical landscape. Based in Berlin and Mainz respectively, both artists arrived at atmospheric composition through diverse musical journeys, from DJ culture, electronic experimentation and field recording to a deep appreciation of cinematic and modern classical forms. Between them they have released music on respected labels including Dronarivm, Archipel, Ambientologist, Shimmering Moods and they’ve both been regulars on Whitelabrecs too. Their collaboration began with The Unavoidable Death of Loneliness on Ambientologist in 2022, followed by The Quiet Companion on Shimmering Moods the following year.
Their third collaborative album, Sea of Grey, represents the most ambitious chapter in this ongoing artistic dialogue. Developed over a period of more than two years, the record expands upon the cinematic post-classical and Ambient foundations of its predecessors, embracing a broader emotional range and more intricate compositional structures. Built through a uniquely collaborative process, both artists worked directly within the same material, continuously adding, removing and reshaping sounds until each piece found its final form. The result is a body of work that feels remarkably unified, despite being created from separate locations, revealing a creative language that has become increasingly intuitive through their years of collaboration.
Across the album, classical piano motifs and emotive strings arrangements intertwine with Ambient textures, analogue imperfections and carefully sculpted electronic atmospheres. Old amplifiers, radios and tape recorders introduce subtle traces of age and character, while the duo’s meticulous production creates a sense of scale that shifts effortlessly between intimacy and vastness. These contrasting qualities lie at the heart of the album’s identity, allowing moments of delicate vulnerability to coexist alongside expansive cinematic passages.
The title Sea of Grey reflects the album’s central emotional atmosphere. Rather than representing absence or emptiness, the grey of the title suggests complexity, weight and ambiguity; a landscape suspended between certainty and uncertainty. As the artists describe it, the music emerged from a sustained emotional state rather than a fixed concept: “an overcast and open atmosphere, neither hopeful nor despairing”. This emotional openness allows the listener to inhabit the music in a deeply personal way, finding their own reflections within its shifting textures and gradual movements.
While Sea of Grey continues themes explored throughout the duo’s previous collaborations, it also marks a significant step forward. More direct in its expression and more expansive in its compositional scope, the album demonstrates how deeply the two artists have learned to trust one another’s instincts. Despite never creating music together in the same room, they have developed a remarkably coherent shared voice; one that reaches its fullest expression here.’ listen
